Most anglers reported a tough day battling the wind and trying to find wind love wherever possible. So, anyone hoping to plant themselves on a deep water lump had their work cut out for them. It was wet out there but nothing heavy and the thunder and lighting stayed at bay. At the end of the day, anglers headed home and most that we talked to had a tough go of it but, when we saw the day 1 photo submissions and score updates it was evident that not everyone struggled.
Day 2 started the same way as day 1, wet but, the wind sat quite a bit and many teams were able to hit spots that were relatively unfishable for smaller craft the day before. While it seems like you have a large chunk of time on day 2, hours turn into minutes and before you knew it, it was lines out and time to head to the Lakewood Barn.
The awards at the barn is where the participants can really compare notes, swap flies, tell tall tales and have some laughs with old friends and new. In fact, so many participants who were once strangers, form long standing bonds that cross state lines and lead to fishing adventures for years. Upon entering the barn Anglers were treated to their tables full of swag from the guys at Postfly, Thanks Postfly!! Beverages were drank and food was consumed (thanks to Tatro catering!) all while scores were being compiled the team at Rippled Waters. . Prizes were handed out from,
RUSuperfly, Green Mtn. Fly Fishing Camp, Green Mtn. Troufitters, Rep Your Water, Predator Fly Gear, Reddington, Howler Bro's, Chole SalomoneArt, Cheeky Fly Fishing, Whistle Pig Whiskey, Julbo Sunglasses, Stream & Brook Fly Fishing, FlyVines, Tall Cat Coffee, Vermont Fly Guys, Sam Aronson Art, Rio, Cortland, Orvis, Hungry Trout Lodge, Tacky, Bn3th, Berkshire Outfitters, The Forged Fly, & Nick Mayer Art. Thank you all!
We also decided to raffle some bigger ticket items this year and some lucky winners went home with a Postfly streamer rod and a Rock River fly rod. Not to mention another pickler is sitting back with his feet up enjoying a new HD flat screen 55" TV courtesy of the DPC. Congrats to our raffle winners!
This year we had quite a few scorecards that counted too many bass handed in and as a result of that, internet connectivity issues and human error, a couple scorecards had slipped through the cracks by our scoring team. Rule sheets are handed out with scorecards and available on the website. We also reminded folks on social media to review the rules and supplied a link for them. Nevertheless, the buck stops with us and rest assured next year we will use a double verification system to assure 100% verification. The official leader board supplied below is picture verified for prize categories and all involved in scoring discrepancies have been interviewed and are in agreement that the results are correct.
2018 DPC Champ Kemener Whalen of team Swamp Bass
-With that said, this years DPC winner is Kemener Whalen of Team Swamp Bass with a whopping 22 individual points! Kemener is the 1st person to ever take top angler from a non motorized vessel. 2nd place was a 3 way tie between Tom Getz of team Basscar, Matt Dickstein from team Bad Monkey and Max Hogg from team Paddlin for Bass. After review and picture verification of each of their 8th fish it was Tom Getz who took 2nd and Matt Dickerstein in 3rd.
-Top Team awards went to Kemener Whalen & Matt Cain of team Swamp Bass who put up a huge total of 40 team Points! Not only that they did it paddling which makes them the 1st paddle team to ever win the event. They were followed by Jay Modry and Matt Dickstein of team Bad Monkey with a solid 39 pts. and Ben Wilcox and Mike Woulf of team Bash Badge Plus with 37 pts.
Top Paddler Kemener Whalen
-In the paddle division it was once again Kemener Whalen's 22 pts that held the lead followed by his teammate Matt Cain with 18pts. 3rd place was taken by Jeremy Levett of Canada, fishing with The Eh Team.
-There was a bunch of bowfin caught but it was Eli Martell of team The Big Labasski who took it down with a bowfin measuring 28"
Adin Girard took top Jr. Angler with 15 points
-One person we would like to acknowledge is the top Jr. angler, 16 yr old Adin Girard. Adin's score sheet slipped through as an adult and not a Jr. As a result, the Jr. angler was awarded to 8 yr old Maya Dziedzic who put up an impressive 13 points. Upon seeing Maya's face light up when awarded Adin choose not to throw his arms in protest but instead kick back and feel happy for this Young angler...........That, ladies and gentelmen, that is what the DPC is all about!!!!! As a result of his actions, Adin will be receiving a new Orvis recon 8wt courtesy of the DPC.
-This year we also added a fun catagory for the kids in the Jr. Division. The most rock bass caught in the 2 days of fisihing would recive a prize. Well, that prize was won by no other than the kid who thought of it, Noah Lynch who took the prize with 17 rock bass. He was followed by Henry Dowhan with 15.
-The top Dink award went to Maya Dziedzic of team Big Pappa Dill & My Lil Gerkin. Maya was our younest female angler ever and also took home the best team name along with her pop John Dziedzic.
-In the pike catagory it was Sean Martin who took home the win with his lengthy 36" pike. Not only was it 1st place, it was Sean's 1st pike in his life!!!! 2nd place was taken by DPC vet Chris Samson with a pike of 34". That was followed by another DPC alumni Mr. Bradon Weaver in 3rd who landed a 30" pike.
-Last but not least is last years top Jr. angler who took home the big pickle and also landed himself in 4th place overall. For his 20" bass Max Hogg of team Paddlin For Bass received a check at the barn in the amount of $1200 cold hard cash!
Lake Champlain 6/24 P.C. Quinn Lynch (802 bass)
The sun has set on another pickle. Everyone made it on and off the water safe and sound with a story to tell. Can't wait to do it again next year. Thanks again to our sponsors and participants!
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR WINNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
